Register passkeys in Microsoft Authenticator on Android

This article details how to enroll a passkey method in Microsoft Authenticator on your Android Device.

Come February 1, 2027, all currently registered MFA users who opted to use SMS/Call authentication will need to enroll themselves in Passkey verification. To enroll yourself in Passkey verification, follow the steps below.

You must be on Android 14 or later to use Passkey verification. 


1. Download Authenticator from Google Play. Once installed, open it and follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Add your CCRI account to the Authenticator app on your device.

- If you have installed Authenticator for the first time, tap Add Account once you get to the screen that says Secure Your Digital Life:

- If you already have Authenticator installed on your device but never added an account, tap the + button in the top right, then click Work or school account. Tap Sign in.

- If you already have your CCRI account added in Authenticator, click the account, then tap Create a passkey.

3. Go through and complete Multifactor Authentication (MFA).

4. Usage of MFA through the Authenticator App requires a screen lock. If this is not enabled, you will be met with a screen that says Screen lock required. Tap Settings and set up a screen lock.

5. Ensure that Authenticator is enabled as a passkey provider. The method in which this has to be enabled does vary by device. Tap Settings in the bottom right; you may have to head to your device settings and search for "Passkey".

6. After you go back to the Authenticator app, tap Done to confirm Authenticator as a passkey provider. You will see Passkey added as a sign-in method for your account; tap Done again to finish.
