Medial Upgrade Notice: Version 9.1 (Auto-Captioning + Web Recorder Update)

Summary

CCRI is upgrading Medial to v9.1 on Wed 1/14/26 at 7:00 AM. New recordings will auto-caption automatically (captions can be edited). Existing videos wonโ€™t auto-captionโ€”faculty must use Request Captioning, which now triggers auto-captioning (no admin approval). The recorder is now web-only by default; AI/quiz features are included with vendor docs linked.

Media Upgrade Overview

CCRI has upgraded to a new version of Medial. This upgrade, Medial 9.1, introduces auto-captioning for new recordings, a streamlined web-only recorder experience.

๐Ÿ”„ What’s Changing?

โœ… Auto-Captioning (NEW recordings)

  • All new Medial recordings will be auto-captioned automatically after the video finishes processing/encoding.

  • Captions can be reviewed and edited later for accuracy in the Medial interface.

๐ŸŽฅ Recorder Update (Web Recorder by default)

  • The recorder will now launch via the web recorder automatically.

  • Users will no longer be prompted to choose between the web recorder and the client recorder.

โœ… What Faculty Need to Know / Do

๐Ÿ“ Captions for NEW videos

  • Record or upload as usual — captions will generate automatically. No need to re-embed videos in Blackboard afterwards either- the autocaptioning will dynamically populate in your existing videos in Blackboard.

  • Plan to spot-check and edit captions for accuracy (especially for names, acronyms, and technical terms).

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Captions for EXISTING videos (RETRO-CAPTION EMBEDDED BLACKBOARD VIDEOS)

Existing videos will not be auto-captioned automatically as part of this upgrade but you can trigger the auto-captioning for each one you are actively using for course content.

To caption an existing Medial library video:

  • Use the existing "Request Captioning" workflow in Medial.

  1. Login to medial@ccri.edu and click on the profile account area in the upper right-hand corner and select "My Content" and then select "Content"

  2. Select the "Edit" (pen icon on right) button next to the video you want to retro caption from the list

  3. Select the Associate Files tabUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. Select "Request Captioning"_ select autocaptioning in the drop-down
  5. Click the Next button to get to the next page
  6. Click Finish

  • This was the existing human captioning (Verbit) workflow. It had been repurposed so that Request Captioning now triggers auto-captioning (no admin approval required).

This is the recommended approach for faculty who reuse Medial videos each semester and need captions added to older embedded course content. Please allow several minutes for the captioning to process (the longer the video the longer the processing time). You will recieve an email notification when captioning has completed. The video updates with captioning automatically in the Blackboard embed- no further action required! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿงฉ Blackboard usage (current workflow)

  • Many faculty currently embed Medial videos manually in Blackboard. That same workflow remains in place for now.

  • ๐Ÿ“Œ See KB: Embed Medial in Blackboard (note: this will be updated for Ultra UI as needed).

๐Ÿ”ฎ Future Medial Updates and Integrations (After the Blackboard Ultra Conversions)

๐Ÿค– COMING SOON.... Blackboard Ultra LTI integration + Medial AI + ๐Ÿงฉ Quizzing Enhancements

CCRI will link to Medial documentation and roll out additional guidance as our Blackboard Ultra plans and integrations progress. As CCRI completes Blackboard Ultra conversions and finalizes integration decisions, we will provide additional guidance on:

  • ๐Ÿ”— Blackboard Ultra integration approach (LTI 1.3 placement and workflows)

  • ๐Ÿ“Š Quiz analytics/reporting access ๐Ÿ‘‰ Medial v9 AI Video Quizzes (Overview)

  • โœ… Possible grade passback / deeper LMS integration (if enabled)

For now, CCRI communications will focus on the immediate faculty impacts:
auto-captioning + web recorder default behavior.
