Upgrading to Windows 11

Description: Windows 11 brings enhanced features, better performance, increased security, and heightened accessibility to help you get the most out of your work experience. 

How-to Upgrade:

  1. Open Software Center on your computer.
    1. Click either the Windows button on the keyboard or search for "Software Center" in the start menu.
  2. Look for the Windows 11 upgrade; it will be under the Operating Systems on the left. It will likely have the format Windows 11 2xHx x64. Click it, then click Install. Read the on-screen prompt then click Install.

  3. Click Install and let the upgrade process run. Sit tight; it can take up to ninety minutes to complete so we suggest you start it before going to lunch or leaving for the evening. In some cases, it may take longer.

Why should I switch?

  • Windows 11 is the next step toward a more modern and secure computing experience. We encourage you to upgrade as soon as possible so you can start enjoying these new features. As Windows 10 is phased out, CCRI is switching to an environment where Windows 11 is the go-to operating system for our computers; it is secure, reliable, and monolithic in support.

What are the benefits of Windows 11 over Windows 10?

  • Windows 11 offers heightened productivity features and functionality designed to support and meet the challenges of working in a hybrid environment. It has a refreshed look and feel that helps you get more done with less stress.

What happens to my files during the upgrade?

  • The default experience during a Windows 11 upgrade is such that the new files and data are moved to the new Windows 11 install. However, Microsoft always recommends backing up your files before installing a new Windows iteration. If files are already synced to OneDrive, additional action may not be necessary. Microsoft has an article for uploading and saving files and folders to OneDrive, and the IT Help Desk can be contacted for any assistance with setting this up.

Will Windows 11 work with my current software and accessories?

  • Most software and accessories are cross-compatible between Windows 10 and Windows 11. For specific product compatibility details with Windows 11, check with the software vendor or accessory manufacturer for more information.

How long does the upgrade process usually take?

  • The amount of time the Windows 11 upgrade takes varies. For example, the amount of time that it takes to download Windows 11 depends on Internet speed. Downloading and installing Windows 11 usually takes longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update. We found it can take about 90 minutes at a CCRI campus.
